Celebrating 50 Years of Civil Rights

Summer of Civil Rights Celebration
Saturday, June 21, 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Fun, food, entertainment and learning for the whole family! We will begin a summer-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act with a craft, puppet show, music and dance.  Joining us for the afternoon will be Diverse Moves, Marion Community Choir and the MGL Band. Food will be available for purchase.

Join us to talk about how this novel by Fannie Flagg relates to the Civil Rights Movement. Copies of the book are available on the Rediscover wall in the library and at our branches in Caledonia, LaRue and Prospect.

African American Women During the Civil War

Dr. Annette Jefferson’s  talk focuses on women of African descent—Susie King Taylor who nursed with Clara Barton; Elizabeth Keckley, dressmaker and confidant to Mary Todd Lincoln; Charlotte Forten, college graduate and first African American to teach freed slaves in the south, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and others—and their unique contributions to the war effort.
